Throwback Thursday

Today's throwback is from today's date last year: the quarry.

Thornton Quarry is just over the state line from me and the tollway actually goes right over it. You can see a not quite street view of it here. There is a high horizon line from the road which I was thinking of when I painted this piece.

Not a lot of art making has happened in the studio this week. There were days of sketching. Well, not really days of sketching, but days when only sketching was done. Better something than nothing. There has been a lot of behind the scenes/admin work. There was waiting on art supply shipments. Delivery of gouaches to Sip on Thursday and an opening at Merge on Friday and another delivery to Paul Henry's on Saturday. And The Cleaning Of The Studio Has Begun... Still I managed to work on and off on this new painting, which seems huge after painting pieces 4" x 4".

There will be more ink and conté added in over the next week and probably more paint, too. Also up this week: delivering some gouaches for the Triad show at Cornerstone and the opening at Sip Friday night. And I'm very excited to announce that I will be featured at the Depot Art Gallery in Beverly Shores this "season." I will be thinking about that work in a more organized way.

Throwback Thursday

It is dreary and raining here and we will need a boat if this continues. So I thought a warm cheery piece was in order for today's throwback. This is one of the early ink drawings, from the series I eventually called All the Things I Never Said, and some other secrets. While most of the ink drawings have a funny-sad quality, this one is just happy.

Fun fact to know and share: One of the layers in this piece says it was as if all the planets had aligned. This line of text also shows up in seneca.

As much as I am enjoying these gouaches, I am itching to do some bigger gestural work and I just don't have the space to do it right now. (My lousy studio assistant really needs to get things in order. I can barely walk through my art room right now.) But I did just order some new supplies, more gouache, more paper - including some yupo, which I've never tried and some stretcher bars. So bigger things are on the horizon. Until all that arrives, there will be more little #art365 landscapes, although some of them may be more abstract than others...

This week: The COLD show at Sip is coming down and new work will be delivered for their next show DRIFT: #art365 coming and going there. Friday is the opening at Merge, where consideration and before are both included.

In other news, consideration and before were both accepted in the re-eMergence winter show at Merge. They will be delivered this week. Show opens on the 21st. And I really need to clean my studio, because I want to get back to big work.

Throwback Thursday

Today's Throwback Thursday is from last year. With so much artwork created last year through my #art365 plan, it occurred to me that some Thursday's would fall on a day where last year's creation was still available. At this time last year, I was delivering america series paintings to The Edge, a coffee shop in Crete, Illinois and did 3 pieces featuring the farm fields in the area. This piece is now in COLD at Sip in Crown Point.

This week more #art365 landscapes. I really am enjoying the gouache.  Eventually I will get around to ordering some stretcher bars and get on with some larger paintings.

The top image was sent off this week for the #postcardswap. It is on its way to a new home! And the next three were sold within a day of posting them on facebook, and with a backup sale to boot! If only it was always so easy to sell work!

This coming week I will be at Live Art at Studio 659 on Friday night. There will be lots of artists creating work during the reception, which must be completed and hung by 9 pm. I participated last year and it was lots of fun. You can see lots of pics (of me painting!) from last year in Wes Bushby's blog post here and the work I created in my post here.

Next week I'll post the first installment of the #postcardswap. The ones I've seen so far are great!
