Throwback Thursday

This week's throwback takes me back to my printmaking roots. I need to do more of these. They're a lot of fun to make.

in the studio

Just one work in progress this week. I'm maybe eight layers in and a ways to go. The blue is too heavy, or heavier than I intended at this level, but I'm enjoying the vibrancy. I think it will remain very green. Earlier in the week, I finished the final reporting for the grant project and that is a relief to be done with.

Throwback Thursday

This week's throwback is a prairie linocut from 2013's #printoctober project. This is one of a dozen prints which are at Nido Bianco for a short while longer.

in the studio

This week in the studio included more moving into the studio. I worked two days there doing collages. I hope to have regular studio hours at the end of next month, until then it will sporadically.

This was a very full weekend. Landscape's Language closed at the Towle Theater during the Hammond Art Walk, Saturday Afternoon. We made it into the paper! That evening the after party/ Second Saturday/ LIVE IN THE VILLE event was happening at White Ripple (including the Dyer Arts Visionaries Pop Up). Sunday was Family Arts Day at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts. I spent the afternoon helping kids make paper crowns, which was super fun.

Next week will be much quieter.

Throwback Thursday

This week's throwback is late summer. This piece was done during the America series but really relates more to the current heartland works. I just added this into the artwork displayed in my studio yesterday. Look for it in the hallway outside my studio door this Saturday!

in the studio

So this week's in the studio takes on a whole new meaning. I have been working out of my home studio, aka the former guest room for the last several years. And this week I moved into a real, legitimate studio at White Ripple Gallery in Hessville.

I'm sharing the space with fellow artist Tony Lipka. We've got a bit more to move in, but we managed to be set up in time for Saturday's opening of LIVE IN THE VILLE month-long event. We'll be updating the work every month for Second Saturday. Meanwhile, I have just a few more days of kids-in-school freedom, so I will be working between the two spaces til the end of July, when I will start to have regular studio hours. Until then, I'll be available there on Second Saturdays and by appointment.

Workwise, I am still tweaking the seenUNseen project and we got the group together for a feedback session Saturday. This was very helpful. We are regrouping at the end of summer for phase two. Teaching work ended last week and I'll be able to get all of the associated art supplies out of my house tomorrow, which will please my husband to no end. They sort of take over and breed when no one's looking.

Out of the studio brings me back to the new studio space at White Ripple Saturday, and to the Dyer Arts Visionaries Pop Up Gallery space also at White Ripple. (love wins is there now.) Sunday was the 64th Annual Chesterton Woman's Club Art Show, where I had two small #art365 paintings of the prairie.

Up next week: Saturday is the Downtown Hammond Art Walk. This is really the last chance to see the Landscape's Language pulp paintings at the Towle Theater. I will be there 11 am to 2 pm. Lots and lots of participants this year.

And then back to White Ripple Saturday evening for the Second Saturday opening/open studios 6-10 pm. This Sunday I'll be at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster teaching art for their Family Arts Day! It'll be a busy weekend, but should be lots of fun!

Throwback Thursday

This week's throwback is an untitled prairie print, from 2013. This was printed in an edition of eight and I will have them, and some other printmaking and #art365 paintings and collages this Saturday in my new studio at White Ripple Gallery!

Every Saturday in June there will be a ton of events happening in Hessville as part of LIVE IN THE VILLE. If you are local to NWI I hope you'll check it out!

in the studio

These posts have become really infrequent because I've been working on a project I can't share yet. Possibly next week.

detail, seenUNseen project

Out of the studio, a lot is happening. This week I updated works at Paul Henry's. There are now nine collages there which have never been shown before. I delivered heartland work on Wednesday which was installed for a Dyer Arts Visionaries show. The Friday reception was very successful and I sold two pieces. The heartland show will be up for about 2 months. I entered two juried shows, and I stopped the opening of the Giant Monsters Show at Paul Henry's to support a bunch of local artists.

And something big is in the works. But that's a secret for now, too. Next week's in the studio should be less vague.

Throwback Thursday

This week's throwback, below the surface, is one of twenty three heartland paintings installed this week at Benedict's for the Dyer Arts Visionaries. Show opens this Friday 7-9 pm.

Throwback Thursday

The spirea is blooming.

This week's throwback is spirea, and if you were following along a few years ago, this was the painting that went on and on and on. Everyday the spirea outside my studio looked a little different, and everyday this piece evolved. I finally just had to stop, because it would have never been finished.

in the studio

In the studio this week (last week, actually: this is a Mother's Day delayed post.) One finished piece and one work in progress. Still need to title these.

Out of the studio, Friday at HAC, Corey Hagelberg's In the Garden woodcuts opened. Saturday was the ATC trade at Nido Bianco. (There will be a separate post about that.) I ventured up to Michigan with fellow artist Leslie Lambert, and was back in time for BJAM's Armonia at White Ripple.

Up next: getting ready for heartland to go to Dyer at the end of the month for the Dyer Arts Visionaries. Reception 5.29, save the date now!

in the studio

This week: I finally finished something. These are 8" x 8". The green ones are done. The red is close.

Out of the studio this week: openings at the Towle Theater for Landscape's Language and a group show LOOK15 at Merge. And I took no photos at either one. Next week: I have a very full week of teaching but I'm hoping to clean out the studio, or at least the desk so I can get started on the Prufrock pieces. I'm planning ten series of ten. Saturday is the ATC trade at Nido Bianco, which should be lots of fun. I will remember photos there.

throwback thursday

Today's throwback is a pulp painting from last fall's residency. It's at the Towle Theater as part of Landscape's Language. Opening Tomorrow Night!

begin again, pulp painting, ~9" x 9"

And since the reception just misses Autism Awareness Month, I'm extending the donation pledge through tomorrow. 25% of sales opening night will be going to the National Autism Association in Northwest Indiana.

in the studio

In the studio this week: two small works in progress. Heading in a more minimalist direction - at least trying to. I'm fighting against myself a bit on it. I keep seeing what I want, and it's more subtle than what I've created in long time. The upper piece needs a bit more work at the transition and the lower one is pretty close to done. I need to look at it for a bit.

Out of the studio, I went to Nido Bianco on Saturday for Art Attack and saw some friends. Andrea Peterson was there giving demos of paste papers and suminagashi papers. This was great because I had no interest in the sumi and now I want to do it!
I also delivered a bunch of large scale works which will be at Tapistry Brewing for the next two months. And I confirmed a heartland series solo show for Dyer Arts Visionaries at the end of May.

Up next: Friday night is the opening at the Towle for Landscape's Language (finally!) I'm so excited for this opening! Twenty-one pulp paintings created during last fall's residency at Hook Pottery Paper. The reception is before The Next Thing You Know opening night. After the play, I'll be at Merge for their LOOK15 opening, where I have 4 heartland paintings. Friday is May 1st and Autism Awareness Month will be over, but I'm continuing my donation pledge through these openings - and I've upped the donation to 25% of sales for these locations. Also next week, I'm serving as a grant panelist for the IAC, which is a very interesting experience - to be on the other side of the grant process.

Throwback Thursday

The magnolia trees are blooming here. They always bloom near Easter. My grandmother had one in her front yard and it always bloomed around her birthday. And my older son shares her birthday, which was earlier this week. So in recognition of those two special people, today's throwback is magnolia petals, scattered, 2013, acrylic 5" x 7"

Don't forget about the 10% for autism!

in the studio

A slightly delayed, but better late than never post. This week got a whole lot of artwork out of my studio, and yet it's still so full? Early on in the week I took the rest of the work to Nido Bianco. They now have 20 pieces of printmaking and paintings.

Friday was the delivery and install for Landscape's Language at the Towle Theater. How amazing to see all of this work framed and up on the wall! I am so excited about this show. The work will be up through June but the artist reception is May 1st, to coordinate with opening night of the performance Next Thing You Know

Friday night was the opening reception for Randy Buvala at Paul Henry's. Some really great work there. That show will be up to the end of May. If you are local go get yourself there to see it. Saturday was the art group meeting for SeenUnseen. Good things will be coming out of this and I feel so lucky to have been invited to be a part of it. After that I went over to Nido Bianco for a bit for their opening weekend and got to meet a number of the other artists showing there. What a really positive atmosphere is there. It just feels good to be there.

Up next, I need to actually start working on my piece for SeenUnseen and then get to the 100 painting challenge, too. I have a delivery to Hammond Art Center for The Trap. Wednesday this week is my talk for South Lake Artist Co-Op about the residency and the grant. And also Wednesday is the beginning of the 10% for autism pledge.

10% (or more!) for autism

It's that time of year again: We're approaching Autism Awareness month. My older son is at the severe end of the autism spectrum, so I am very Aware of Autism. I am, however doing my part to give something back, and hopefully get some people to be more aware and possibly more understanding and accepting.

For the month of April I will be donating at least 10% of all of my art sales to the National Autism Association of Northwest Indiana. The NAA is known for its support of keeping children as safe as possible from wandering. They also provide grants locally to families to help offset the high medical expenses associated with caring for someone with autism.

This includes not only sales from my studio, but all gallery sales as well. And there are a lot galleries where my work can be found. 10% of sales at all of these locations will be donated.

Nido Bianco has 20 pieces including prairie inspired linocuts, monotypes, and printmaking/paintings.

Towle Theater has my most recent work. I am most excited about this show. Twenty one pieces of papermaking completed at a residency last fall. I'm switching things up for this show and instead of 10%, I will be donating 25% of sales from work in this show through the artist reception on May 1st.

in the studio

Oh, these in the studio posts have been absent for the last month because it's been a lot of admin and behind the scenes work. Lots of things are happening but not lots of artmaking.
Although I did manage 40 ATC collages between the end of last week and the beginning of this week. (Here are a few of them.)

So what's been keeping me so busy?

Landscape's Language A large selection of the work I completed at last fall's papermaking residency is heading to the Towle Theater in Hammond for the next couple for months. Seven large pieces at the framers, but I framed the fourteen smaller pieces at home. Still to do this week: make labels. The install is this Friday! The artist reception is May 1st, and there will be an artist talk April 1st at Paul Henry's during the South Lake Artist Co-Op April meeting.

ATC Challenge 39 I've joined Susan Henshaw's ATC Challenge. I previously was part of an ATC trade she organized a few years ago. This round she has upped the challenge a bit. There will be 30 cards to trade with 30 artists, but there will also be 9 additional pieces made which will be matted and offered for sale at Nido Bianco in Three Oaks, Michigan.

And speaking of Nido Bianco, I am very pleased to announce that I have joined Nido Bianco's family of artists! I am delivering work tomorrow and will have eight printmaking/paintings and a dozen monotypes and linocuts available. Nido's is a beautiful, brand new gallery which opens on Friday!

10% for autism April is Autism Awareness Month and for the last couple of years I have been donating 10% of my sales through the month of April to the local chapter of the National Autism Association. This is a charity near and dear to me because my older son is on the spectrum. This year, I will be donating at least 10%. (So, yes, sometimes I will be donating more than 10%)  I'm working out a studio sale to coincide with this, because I would like to clear through some of the overabundance of work I have. Stay tuned for that.

Throwback Thursday

Some of my printmaking (from 2013's #printoctober) is getting a second chance. I'm framing a number of linocuts to be taken to Nido Bianco in Three Oaks, Michigan. This prairie piece is one that will be there. They open later this month on the 27th.
